What was originally supposed to be a 5 minute informational video on the underground music scene at the Berklee College of Music quickly became a full fledged mini documentary detailing the ins and outs of basement shows and the meaning of DIY music. Over the course of six months, Julia Blatz attended shows and interviewed members of the community to answer the question: What is the DIY scene and why is it important to Berklee? Shot on both the iPhone XR and a Nikon D3400 (that somehow didn’t get smashed in the mosh pit), “A Scene For Ourselves” seeks to embody the indie aesthetic it documents. The documentary features a number of Berklee artists as well as the residents of houses that put on concerts in their homes. And of course the soundtrack is comprised of music that brings the scene to life, pulled straight from the basement.
